What can a "failed" priest, who gets the boot from the Church of England, possibly do afterwards with his God-given talents? Ex-Rev Mark Townsend became a pagan magician and sorcerer! This is the obvious choice for someone who is no longer a Vicar. As a member of the Independent Association of Celebrants, Mark can not only bury your loved one, but make them levitate at their funeral! (right). Also, he is popular in many schools where he appears as a Wizard, and confounds kids with amazing tricks. For those with a more spiritual yearning, Mark conducts Retreats - as a Druid. There is no end to his appeal.
He has performed for nuns, African Masai warriors and to congregations across Britain. If you want to add some fun to your Church, why not get him to levitate your congregation and stick them on the ceiling? There is no end to what an unemployed clergyman can find to do.

Good story but you've sadly got the facts a little wrong.
ReplyDeleteI'm not a 'Pagan Sorcerer' but a mere 'Stage Magician' who is still a C of E Priest (though a VERY Liberal / Progressive one) and who alos follows a Druidic path. I find the modern Druids I know to be beautiful people who see the good in all, and are not obessed with sin and darkness.
If only the Church could learn from our Pagan friends.

Father Mark is a wonderful inspiring Priest who uses magic to bring wonder back into religious and spiritual practice. For instance, while officiating at the funeral of a Dad who left behind young children, he used bubbles to explain to the children that although their Dad was not visible to them any longer, they could still speak to him, and just as the bubbles traveled upwards, so would their words. He then captured two of the bubbles that 'magically' turned into heart-shaped crystals which he presented to the children to keep as a reminder.
ReplyDeleteRev. Townsend is inclusive of all people and all faiths, believing everyone is equally invited to share in the bread and wine of Christ. The religious and spiritual communities could do with a lot more like him.
